Drowning

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and emergency personnel from the Township of Hamilton Dive Team, Brigantine Dive Team, Hamilton Township Emergency Management, the township Rescue Squad, AtlantiCare paramedics and the Mays Landing, Laureldale, Richland and Collings Lakes fire departments run a search operation Monday evening for a drowning victim in Hamilton Township.

MAYS LANDING — Hamilton Township police on Tuesday identified the person who drowned Monday evening in a quarry as Lenyn Mercedes-Payamps, 23, of Pleasantville.

Officers responded at 6:18 p.m. to the quarry off Thelma Avenue for a report of a missing swimmer.

Mercedes-Payamps had tried to swim to a sandbar in the quarry, but was unable, police said investigation revealed. A witness attempted a rescue, but was unsuccessful, police said.

The department coordinated the response of rescue personnel to search for the swimmer, police said in a news release.

Divers from the Township of Hamilton Dive Team and the Brigantine Dive Team searched the quarry and recovered Mercedes-Payamps' body after about three hours of searching, police said.

Assisting were a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, township Emergency Management, the township Rescue Squad, AtlantiCare paramedics and the Mays Landing, Laureldale, Richland and Collings Lakes fire departments.
