Election

Atlantic County voters will elect a number of local, regional and state representatives in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 7. Polls are open 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

New Jersey governor

The two major-party candidates for governor are Republican Kim Guadagno and Democrat Phil Murphy.

Guadagno, who was elected to two terms as lieutenant governor under Chris Christie, is a former federal prosecutor and assistant U.S. attorney in Newark, and in 2007 was elected the first woman sheriff of Monmouth County. Her running mate for lieutenant governor is Carlos Rendo.

Murphy worked for the investment firm Goldman Sachs for 23 years. He was named U.S. ambassador to Germany in 2006 and has served on the board of the NAACP. His running mate is Sheila Oliver.

Also running is Green Party candidate Seth Kaper-Dale.

State Senate

One of the most hotly contested races in the Nov. 7 general election is for the 2nd District state Senate seat of the late Jim Whelan.

Republican Assemblyman Chris Brown is seeking to move up to the state Senate. Colin Bell, his Democratic opponent, is filling the seat in the interim. A former Atlantic County freeholder, Bell was appointed to serve the remainder of Whelan’s term at the beginning of October.

State Assembly

Two 2nd District Assembly seats are up for election. The top two vote-getters will get seats.

Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, a business owner and the former mayor of Northfield, is seeking re-election. His running mate on the Democratic ticket is John Armato, a member of the Buena Vista Township Committee.

Their Republican challengers are Vince Sera, a member of the Brigantine City Council and a lifeguard for 19 years, and Brenda Taube, a business owner and former Margate city commissioner.

Also running are Green Party candidate Mico Lucide and independent candidate Heather Gordon.

Atlantic County sheriff

Seeking the sheriff’s seat currently held by Michael Petuskey, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Frank X. Balles, are Republican Jack Glasser and Democrat Eric Scheffler.

Glasser is the current mayor of Somers Point. He had a 25-year career with the Northfield Police Department.

Scheffler is a retired lieutenant with the Atlantic City Police Department who works as a paraprofessional at Mainland Regional High School.

Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders

Four major-party candidates are running for two at-large seats on the freeholder board. Both are three-year terms.

Republican John W. Risley Jr. is seeking to return to his seat. The other seat is currently held by Alexander C. Marino, who is not seeking re-election. Also looking to win a seat are Republican Tony DiPietro and Democrats Caren Fitzpatrick and Thelma Witherspoon.
