Each week, the Current will select an athlete of the week based on competition involving high schools, youth or adult sports and recreation.

Townsel, an Egg Harbor Township resident, ended his high school football career with a huge game, helping the Wildcats beat Mater Dei 30-14 to win the state Non-Public II title Dec. 3 at Rowan University. Townsel carried 32 times for 232 yards and two touchdowns despite having injured his hamstring near the end of the first quarter. The victory gave St. Joe its first 12-0 season and its 19th championship since the state Non-Public playoffs began in 1993. Townsel, who played one season at Holy Spirit before transferring to St. Joe-Hammonton, rushed for 1,606 yards and 30 touchdowns this season. He has NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Fordham, Sacred Heart and Villanova.
