UPPER TOWNSHIP — As Township Committeeman Hobie Young presented it, the renovations to the press box at Caldwell Park sounded like an old-fashioned barn raising.
Local builders and their crews fixed up the box, installing a new room and windows and putting up new siding. They donated the time for the work.
So Young found it all the more frustrating when the building was damaged one night. The doorknob was broken, possibly by someone trying to gain entry, the new shingles and some siding were torn from the building.
At an October meeting of the Township Committee, he asked anyone with information on the damage to contact the township or call the State Police.
The small building is called the press box, but it’s rarely used by reporters covering games at the park, Young said after the meeting. It’s usually used by announcers at the game. The press box was in poor shape before the renovations, he said.
The builders who worked on the press box have children who participate in the youth athletic program, Young said. They had asked to remain anonymous.
Caldwell Park on Stagecoach Road has several athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball and a playground.
