Egg Harbor Festhaus is located at 446 Saint Louis Avenue in Egg Harbor City in a quiet residential neighborhood in a building that opened in 1890 as the Roesch Hotel with a saloon and dining room. The location has been a tavern and restaurant ever since, most recently an Irish Pub.
Owners Anne and Bob Lund of Brigantine, New Jersey, acquired the property in January of 2018 and spent 7 days a week converting it from an Irish Pub back to its German roots, opening the Egg Harbor Festhaus for business on May 24, 2018.
The Lunds both have German-American heritage and saw an opportunity to serve a traditional German-American menu and a wide variety of draft and bottled beer from Germany setting them apart from any other restaurant in the Jersey Shore area. There was also an opportunity to tie in to the rich German-American history of the Egg Harbor City area.
Shortly after buying the site, the Lunds began searching for a chef and were lucky to find local chef Joe Marszalek, a classically trained chef who was the chef at Busch's Seafood in Sea Isle City for 15 years. Manager Anne Lund and chef Joe Marszalek immediately began researching traditional German-American recipes, many from the Lund's family tradition.
Egg Harbor Festhaus serves 3 kinds of Schnitzel, veal, pork and chicken. 4 types of artisan wursts, frankfurters, homemade spaetzle, potato soup, giant Bavarian pretzels, gourmet hamburgers, fresh fried mushrooms, desserts and much more. Also, there are 6 German beers on draft with plans to add 2 more shortly and a wide selection of domestic beer and cocktails. Special platters not on the regular menu such as Sauerbraten, Rouladen, Chicken & Dumplings and Roast Pork with mashed potatoes and Sauerkraut are offered for $15 on Thursdays. There is also a Happy Hour Tue-Fri 4-6 PM with reduces beer, mixed drinks and Jägermeister shots as well as an Early Bird menu with reduced prices on selected platters and appetizers.
The main room consists of a bar that seats 28 and adjacent dining area that seats 24 at 6 tables. The rear dining room or "Egg Harbor" room seats 32 more at long festival-style tables and is designed to replicate a Bavarian beer hall and pay tribute to the German-American history of the area. Many local organizations and visitors are reserving the "Egg Harbor" room for meetings and special events.
