A free-fruit program offering healthy snacks to children at ShopRite has expanded to more supermarkets.
They join eight in The Press’ coverage area in the program for children 12 and younger in Galloway and Egg Harbor townships, Somers Point, Hammonton, Absecon, Marmora, Rio Grande and Vineland.
The stores’ dietitians have a free banana, clementine or other seasonal fruit for children whose parents are shopping in a store’s produce section.
Program managers and food shoppers at South Jersey locations have said the program gives children a chance to try and learn more about healthy eating.
“We believe that teaching children to develop good eating habits at an early age is extremely important,” said Natalie Menza-Crowe, ShopRite director of health and wellness.
