W. Mae Kent
W. Mae Kent wrote a historical fiction book titled, "Titanic - The Untold Story." It is believed to be the first and only novel set on the Titanic to feature a black hero. Kent's protagonist, Nathan Badeau Legarde, is loosely based on Joseph Phillipe Lemercier Laroche, the only black passenger aboard the ill-fated vessel.

Titanic event and book signing

What It Is: One of the most famous maritime disasters in history is the focus of an event this evening at the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City as the lighthouse unveils it’s newly aquired collection of memorabilia associated with the 1912 sinking of the ocean liner Titanic.

What To Expect: The lighthouse memorabilia collection is valued at about $150,000 and includes debris salvaged from the ship, movie props, books and newspaper displays about the disaster. In addition, Vineland author W. Mae Kent will be on hand to sign copies of her book “Titanic: The Untold Story,” a fictional account about the only black man to die aboard the luxury liner.

Event Info: The event begins 7 p.m at the lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. in Atlantic City. Tickets are $20. Call 609-449-1360.
