Thomas Kinkade celebration in Cape May

What Is It: The late Thomas Kinkade, an artist whose paintings inspired hope and recalled simpler times, will be honored during a tribute today and Sunday at Cape May Convention Hall and Victorian Walk Gallery in Cape May.

What To Expect: The Legacy Celebration exhibit will be unique in the large number of Kinkade's paints being shown, the breadth of the artist's styles represented, and the fact many of these original works never have traveled outside of California. This one-time event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Convention Hall. A champagne brunch will be held for collectors and friends at the Victorian Walk Gallery, located at 315 Ocean St., Sunday.

Event Info: Admission is free to Saturday afternoon's celebration exhibit, but donations to Art in Public Places, a new community outreach program, are welcome. The champagne brunch on Sunday also is free and open to the public.

Symphony in Avalon

What Is It: An evening of romanticism and nationalism by the Bay-Atlantic Symphony closes the "Symphony by the Sea" series of concerts tonight at Avalon Elementary School, 235 32nd St., Avalon.

What To Expect: Robert Schumann's romantic "Piano Concerto in A minor" opens the program, which is titled "Brahms and Friends." The soloist in the concerto will be the Russian-American pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine. One of the most popular of Brahms' orchestral works also will be featured - his "Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a." The concert will close with Antonin Dvorak's "Czech Suite, Op. 39." This is a work of hearty nationalism with a rich variety of folk idioms.

Event Info: The music starts at 7 tonight at the school. Tickets are free and available to the general public from the Avalon Free Public Library, which is the same building and address as the school. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
