Miss Oregon Rebecca Anderson doesn't always appear impeccably dressed in an evening gown. Sometimes, the 23-year-old can be found in brightly-colored tennis shoes and a giant safari hat, her costume when she works as a clown. But those who ...don't like clowns shouldn't worry. "I'm a cute clown," Rebecca said of the part-time job she has with an event company. She also works part-time as a personal assistant. "I'm working, trying to save up," she said.
This year was her fourth trip to Miss Oregon, a competition she became involved in for the scholarship money. "I was trying to take the burden off of my family and myself," she said of the high cost of college. She earned $10,000 as Miss Oregon. She graduated in 2013 from Portland State University with a degree in environmental science and plans to earn a second degree in atmospheric science.
Weather forecasting and the science behind it is her passion. "It's ever changing, especially in Oregon. Our weather is very hard to predict," she said. "In Oregon we say, 'If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change.'"
Her platform is American Red Cross: Red for Life, an effort to promote blood donation.  A few years ago a close friend was in an accident and she saw the value of blood donation. She also coordinated a blood drive for her mother's Rotary Club and the effort has since been an important issue for her.
Rebecca, known among friends as Momma Becca, stands just 5 foot 4 inches tall, but said friends tell her she has the personality of someone much taller. Rebecca's trip to Atlantic City will be a first in many ways. "I've never been east of Montana," she said. "This is going to be a whole new adventure."
