Assemblyman Chris Brown is holding a rally Friday night in Egg Harbor Township to announce his candidacy for the state senate seat that will be open because of Sen. Jim Whelan's retirement.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Cardiff VFW in Egg Harbor Township and is open to the public.

Brown, 52, has been in the General Assembly since 2012. He will run against Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, who announced his candidacy earlier this month.

Brown and Mazzeo squared off in the 2015 Assembly race. That election was the most expensive race in the state that year, with $2 million coming from a Super PAC tied to Democratic power broker George Norcross.
