MAYS LANDING — An Atlantic City woman has been charged with the assault of a 1-year-old boy who was in her care, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced Thursday.

Lisa Henderson, 55, was charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child and sent to Atlantic County jail Tuesday, Tyner said in a written statement.

On Nov. 30, Atlantic City police and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation related to a child with a significant head injury, Tyner said.

The victim was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in At-lantic City, and later transferred to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

It was determined the child suffered from a brain bleed and required emergency medical treatment, and the injury occurred at Henderson’s home, Tyner said. Henderson was the child’s babysitter.

Henderson is self-employed, operating an unlicensed day-care facility out of her residence, Tyner said.

On Nov. 30, Henderson was the lone adult watching several young children. She said the child fell from a bed, which was about 23 inches high, and the fall caused him to have a seizure and lose consciousness, Tyner said.

Medical reports indicated the child had a fracture on the right side of his skull, a large subdural hematoma, a cervical spine injury and retinal hemorrhages. This was classified as a near-fatal injury, Tyner said.

Medical reports also indicate a short household fall does not explain these injuries, Tyner said.

The child has been released from the hospital.

Assistant Prosecutor David Ruffenach represents the state in this matter.
