A Union County man was dealt a $1.52 million Royal Flush while gambling online — New Jersey’s largest-ever legal Internet jackpot — BetfairCasino.com announced Monday.

The winner, whose name wasn’t disclosed, wagered $2,000 Feb. 14 while playing Let It Ride, a poker variant, according to the company, which partners with Golden Nugget for online gambling.

In an account provided by BetfairCasino.com, the winner describes how, after a roughly two-hour betting session, “I was ready to end my night of play.”

Then, “I was dealt Queen, Jack and 10 of Diamonds. Great! I have a mini straight flush! To my amazement I was dealt the King and Ace of Diamonds! A Royal Flush! Really! I was in total shock! Not my first royal either and yes, still in shock! Then I realized it was a $1,522,000 payout! Now I was in shock! I thought it was a dream!”

The jackpot was verified by state regulators and publicized Monday.

Don Ryan, general manager of BetfairCasino.com, said in a statement: “We’re thrilled to be a part of U.S. online gaming history.”

New Jersey’s second-largest legal online jackpot came in November 2014, when a player won $1.33 million through HarrahsCasino.com.

New Jersey launched legal Internet gambling in November 2013 and remains the only state that offers a full array of legal online casino betting.

The practice generated about $122.9 million in revenue in 2014, falling far short of predictions that the industry might be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in its first full year.

But the market has been gaining momentum lately, with January revenue clocking in at $11.5 million, up more than 22 percent from the same month last year.

Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City’s first casino, hopes its own online betting platform will be fully deployed this week, bringing to six the number of Atlantic City casinos offering Internet bets.

Robert Ambrose, who spent decades as a slots and marketing executive in Atlantic City and now teaches at Drexel University’s Dennis Gomes Memorial Casino Training Lab, said Monday’s announcement is “the best advertising money can buy” for the online betting industry.

He said blockbuster jackpots typically occur when a player is betting the maximum amount possible.

The Feb. 14 Royal Flush, for example, “may have appeared in the past, but the customer may not have been playing max bet,” he said.

“If that winning combination comes up and you had four credits as opposed to five, you’re going to be one sorry character,” he said.
