GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — A driver stopped by police Sunday night drove away, then crashed a stolen vehicle into a tree before running away, police said.

At 8:47 p.m., police stopped the Chrysler Town and Country minivan at Route 9 and Seaview Ridge Drive. When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped away, police said.

Police said the driver crashed into a tree at Jimmie Leeds Road and New Leaf Court and the driver ran into the woods. Police learned the car had been stolen from a Smithville residence 15 minutes before the vehicle stop.

Galloway police, along with Stockton University police, searched the area. The State Police Aviation Division also conducted a helicopter search of the wooded area. The suspect has not been found, according to police.

Anyone with information can call Detective Bryan Casey at 609-652-3705, ext. 310.
