NORTHFIELD — Zion Road remained closed late Wednesday morning in the vicinity of Northfield Community School due to a service line break in a pipe that feeds off the water main.
A call at 4:25 a.m. of water coming up on Zion Road near the corner of New Road proved to be a service line break rather than a main break once crews went out and checked, according to Denise Venuti Free, director of external communication for New Jersey American Water Co.
Venuti Free said a service line is the water line that runs off the water main in the street to an individual property. The break in this case was directly in front of Adams Perfect Funeral Home at the corner of Zion and New roads.
A crew of three from the Fire Road office of New Jersey American Water — George Harmon and Mike Eyken of Egg Harbor Township and foreman Ed Scanlon of Upper Township — responded and were working with a jackhammer and shovels to make a small opening in the road to reach the break. The location is close to the curb, and police were onsite directing traffic.
Zion Road is closed from New Road to Juniper Drive. Access to the parking lot for Mainland Professional Campus is available via Juniper Drive.
Venuti Free said just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning that the three-man crew would be on site for an expected four to six hours until the repair is completed.
She said the bitter cold weather the region is experiencing usually does increase line leaks and breaks, but so far the region has been fortunate. There have been only two main breaks, one service leak and one break in all of Atlantic and Cape May counties over the past two days, which is not considered extreme, she said.
