BRIGANTINE — A New York man was arrested after police found a handgun and drugs inside a home rented on Airbnb.

Police on Sunday responded to a report of an open door at a home in the 400 block of Sheridan Place. The neighbors reported the open door because they believed the home was unoccupied and there was a possible burglary, police said.

Officers found the front door to the home open and a handgun on a table in plain view.

Detectives later found the home was being rented through the online lodging and rental service Airbnb. The renter was identified as Joshua J. Vanosten, 25, of Brooklyn, New York. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

New Jersey does not allow permitted gun owners from out of state to transport their guns across state lines.

Vanosten was taken to the Atlantic County jail in Mays Landing.
