Along with Photographer Craig Matthews, I made my return to western Cumberland County for this week's On The Road, visiting Deerfield and Upper Deerfield Townships.
In Deerfield, I met with the "Strawberry King", Butch Sparacio, of Sparacio Farms. Butch talks about strawberry farming in Jersey and the impact weather had on this crop. For the perfect berry turnout, you need:
1) Mild days and chilly, but not cold nights. Butch says 70 during the day and 50s at night are best.
2) About 1 inch of rain a week. However...
3) ...It would come all in a short amount of time. Say, from a thunderstorm.
See how this season fared.
Then, I made the quick drive over Upper Deerfield to explain why weather is the reason that this town is a South Jersey Special.
