Egg Harbor City’s Memorial Day parade and services Monday have been canceled due to likely rain, Councilwoman Hazel Mueller said Sunday.

Middle Township, Cape May County, also canceled its parade. Avalon, Cape May County, canceled its parade and moved its ceremony indoors.

“It looks like there is no way that the day isn’t going to be a complete rain event,” Mueller said in her cancellation notice. “I encourage you to place your flowers and wreaths at the monuments when the rain stops, whenever that will be.”

She also encouraged everyone to participate in the 3 p.m. national Moment of Remembrance.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause for one minute wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to remember and honor those who have died in service to the U.S.

It’s a way to “put the memorial back in Memorial Day,” founder Carmella LaSpada has said.

The Egg Harbor City war monuments are at Lincoln Park near the train station and at the Egg Harbor City Cemetery at Moss Mill Road and Hamburg Avenue.

Mueller is chairwoman of City Council’s events committee.

“It started with a call from the Police Department and I talked to other people,” said Mueller. “We can’t really reschedule because people have other things going on.

She said she doesn’t remember the Memorial Day celebration ever being canceled before in city history.

Later Sunday, Middle Township Police announced that the Middle Township Memorial Day Parade was canceled Monday due to weather. Avalon also sent a release about its change of plans.
