GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — A township man who crashed a stolen vehicle into a tree Sunday before running from police was arrested Monday, authorities said.
Eric Von Hess, 38, was arrested and charged with eluding police.
At 8:47 p.m., police stopped a minivan at Route 9 and Seaview Ridge Drive. The driver, later identified as Von Hess, sped away when Officer Steve Garrison approached, police said.
The driver crashed into a tree at Jimmie Leeds Road and New Leaf Court, and Von Hess ran into the woods. Police said the car was stolen from a Smithville residence 15 minutes before the initial stop.
Galloway police, along with Stockton University police, searched the area. The State Police Aviation Division also conducted a helicopter search of the wooded area.
Von Hess was found Monday and taken to the Atlantic County jail.
He was previously charged with eluding Galloway police on Sept. 12, 2016, police said.
