A fight involving 30 people — some teenagers and others adults — Saturday night at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing ended in the arrest of a township 17-year-old who was charged with disorderly conduct for throwing chairs, police said.
Hamilton Township police said the fight was reported at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Hamilton Mall security officers asked for assistance “dealing with a large fight involving approximately 30 people,” according to a statement issued by police.
As township police officers were responding, they were told that gunshots had been fired by a man. After getting a description, police saw “a large juvenile male fitting the description (of the gunman) running across the Black Horse Pike,” according to the statement.
He was detained between McDonalds and the Toys R Us store at the Festival Mall, according to the police report. Police said they charged the 17-year-old — whose name wasn’t released because he is a juvenile — with disorderly conduct for throwing chairs during the altercation.
Multiple fights broke out from the time of the call until approximately 7:15 p.m.
An investigation revealed that no gun shots were fired and no handgun was involved. The fights involved teenagers and, later, adults who knew the teenagers, police said. People were told to leave the area and complaints were filed against three people who police did not identify.
Video of the incident is available, and police may issue complaints against more people after a review of the footage, the statement said.
