TOMS RIVER — The search for a man who exchanged gunfire with a police officer in Tuckerton ended with his arrest at New York’s Penn Station, authorities said Friday.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said 29-year-old Miguel Villegas, of New Haven, Connecticut, opened fire at 10:22 a.m. Thursday after a Tuckerton police officer stopped the vehicle he was a passenger in. That vehicle crashed and Villegas ran away, at one point riding an adult tricycle.

Nearby schools were placed on lockdown.

Villegas apparently used a ride share service and eventually ended up at the train station, where he was apprehended Thursday night.

Authorities said Villegas will face attempted murder, kidnapping and weapons charges after he is extradited back to New Jersey.

Villegas is also wanted in Connecticut, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a news release.

The officer was not injured.
