BRIDGETON — City police are attempting to identify a body found at a homeless camp early Wednesday morning.

At 3:46 a.m., a patrolling officer was doing a property check near South Laurel Street. The officer checked a rooftop area, finding a pile of blankets and noticing a strong smell, according to a post on the Police Department’s Facebook page.

The officer looked off the south end of the second-story roof and between the two buildings. The officer noticed a man’s body, which was confirmed when authorities accessed the area at ground level.

Police said medical examiners said the body was heavily decomposed and estimated it had been there for at least a week.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information can call the Bridgeton Police Department at 856-451-0033.
