PLEASANTVILLE — A garage next to a long-vacant Pleasantville business was engulfed in flames Tuesday afternoon, sending out smoke plumes that could be seen from nearly 20 miles away.
The Pleasantville Fire Department received a call at 4 p.m. of a possible shed fire at an unoccupied residential property on Adams Avenue.
Upon arrival, authorities found an unoccupied, detached garage in flames with a vehicle inside. The garage sat on the property of the two-story home and adjacent to the former Wood Grain Products building, which has been vacant for more than a decade.
Reports of billowing smoke came in from as far as Mays Landing, police Capt. Matt Hartman said.
“There were large columns of smoke that could be seen all the way out by mile marker 16 on the expressway,” Hartman said.
No one was injured, but three nearby homes were evacuated, Hartman said.
The fire is under investigation by the Pleasantville Fire Department.
