ELK TOWNSHIP — A motorist was struck and killed on a southern New Jersey highway after he got out of his vehicle following an unrelated crash.

State Police say 40-year-old Edward Phillips, of Middle Township, was driving northbound on Route 55 in Elk Township when he was involved in a crash around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Phillips pulled over and got out of his vehicle. He then entered the highway’s left lane, where he was struck by a passing car.

The driver of the car that struck Phillips remained at the scene. Authorities say no charges have been filed so far, but the accidents remain under investigation.

No other injuries were reported in either crash.
