Drone Cell Phone Coverage

Drones carried a portable ‘flying cell site’ into the sky during an exercise last week in Woodbine that demonstrated how first responders with cellphones could call, text and transfer images back to emergency management centers during a crisis such as a hurricane when existing cell towers may be unavailable.

Verizon Wireless is partnering with the American Aerospace Technologies Inc. to hold a drone exercise at the Woodbine Airport, according to Verizon.

The exercise, which takes place 1 p.m. Thursday, will address the company’s emergency preparedness innovations and the advancements in the company’s emergency technology. It will also showcase how Verizon works with local first responders.
