GARRITY, JOHN FRANCIS, SR. - 79 of Margate, died August 22, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. John was born on October 8, 1936 in Philadelphia and moved to Margate when he was in 6th grade. He graduated from St. James School, Holy Spirit High School, Villanova University BA, and Glassboro State College MA. John was married to his high school sweetheart, Theresa (nee Sacco) for 58, years and is also survived by children, Betty Napoli (Fred) and John Garrity, Jr. (Jeanine); a brother Rev. Charles Garrity and sister Lynn Bessey; Grandchildren, Ashley, Ricky, Melissa, Michael, Nicole and Kailyn; in-laws Joanne Barrett, Joe Barrett and Michael Cusack; and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by parents; Charles and Anne Garrity; a sister Barbara Cusack; and in-laws, Joe and Elizabeth Sacco. John's career in education began as a teacher in Egg Harbor Township. He then went on to Pleasantville to become Principal at Park Avenue; 1st Principal of South Main Street School, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. He also served as interim Superintendent at Mainland Regional High School, Ventnor, Hamilton Township Atlantic City and Egg Harbor City. John was active at Blessed Sacrament Church and served as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, bible study facilitator and Couples Club Organizer. He was President of the parish Council and organized numerous parish fundraisers. He also started the computer center at Blessed Sacrament Regional School and volunteered at the school for years. He was a Marriage Encounter volunteer with his wife Theresa and organized a local sharing group, was a team member on presenting weekends, a Diocesan Coordinator, chairman of the national convention in Atlantic City and a member of the family Life Bureau of the Diocese of Camden. John served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Holy Spirit High School, was President of the Teachers Association in Atlantic County, Chairman of Public Employees Charitable Campaign for United Way. board member for the Atlantic County Alliance for Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and a member of the steering committee for Atlantic County Educational Technology Training Center. He was an avid sports fan of Villanova basketball, Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies and loved to travel with Theresa and their friends. He ran beach games on July 4 and Labor Day at the Vendome Avenue beach. He coached Margate baseball Farm League, Little League and Senior League, was the organizer of the Arthur Foreman Award and a member of Phi Delta Kappa. John received the Holy Spirit High School President's Award, Holy Spirit High School Hall of Fame, the Fr. Tom Schiavo award and the ETTC award. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Parish: Blessed Sacrament Church, Margate, where visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
