Pleasantville High School’s Melvin Casco scored two goals to lead the Greyhounds’ boys soccer team to a 5-0 win over visiting Wildwood Catholic on Thursday in a Cape-Atlantic League United Division game.

Pleasantville improved to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in the division. Wildwood Catholic, the defending United champion, fell to 3-7 on the season and 3-6 United.

Casco scored the first goal of the game in the second minute of play. Brayan Irias added a goal and two assists, while Daniel Licona had a goal and an assist and Abdiel Gonzalez scored one goal. All the scoring was in the first half. Gerardo Castro made four saves for the shutout. Tyler Cruz made 10 saves for the Crusaders.

“With our scoring in the first half, I was able to put some other guys in the game,” Pleasantville coach Mark Eykyn said. “We lost three starters to graduation last year, so we have most of the team back. Brayan (16 goals, 18 assists), Melvin (16 goals, 9 assists) and Daniel (11 goals) have been scoring well for us.

“Melvin is probably the best athlete in my 10 years of coaching here, a (Division I) athlete, and he’s only a junior. He’s tall at 6-1, and he’s really good in the weight room. He lifts with the football team in the off-season.”

Pleasantville can clinch the United title with wins at home against Cape May Tech on Oct. 9 and Buena Regional on Oct. 11.

“They’re both tough teams, so we’ll have to step up,” Eykyn said. “We only beat Cape May Tech 2-1 last time (Sept. 17). We played a perfect game to beat Buena in our first game (4-0 on Sept. 19). They have some really good guys, so we’ll have to repeat that.”
