Who is the best high school team since 2000? Is it the Monica Johnson lead Wildwood High School girl’s basketball team of 2002 or is it the Absegami wrestling team of 2003, which was one of the top teams in the country?
We are going to give you the chance to determine who the best area scholastic team is since 2002. Starting Thursday you be able to vote in a March Madness type tournament to determine who that is. The first round starts Thursday and runs through close of business on Monday. The second round will run from Tuesday through April 1. The quarterfinals will run from April 3 to April 6. While the semifinals will from April 8 to April 10. Voting for the final will start April 11 and run through 14. We will announce the winner on April 15.

Monica Johnson, who scored 3,173 career points, led the Warriors to their third straight state Group I championship. Wildwood also beat Immaculate Heart 47-34 in the first round of the Tournament of Champions.

Sprinter Sahmir Jones and distance runner Quentin Bundt led the Greyhounds to the state Group II championship. Jones won the 100- and 400-meter dashes and finished second in the 2000.

The Mustangs won the Meet of Champions. Mainland can lay claim to being the best cross country team in Cape-Atlantic League history. The Mustangs featured runners Greg Hughes, Jim Wyner, Joseph Masters, Spenser Popeson and Alex Palmentieri.

The Red Raiders finished 23-0-1 and did not allow a goal in the state tournament on its way to the state Group III championship. Seniors Jen Cruz and Maggie Long sparked Ocean City.

This was the first of Southern’s three straight state Group IV titles. The Rams featured Danielle Tauro and Jillian Smith – two of the best distance runners in New Jersey high school history.

The Lions won the state Non-Public B title. Point guard Adrienne Rochetti and forward Ikea Witt led Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart beat Northern Burlington in the TOC quarterfinals, but lost to Marlboro in overtime in the semifinals. Witt finished with 1,677 career points. Rochetti scored 1,913 career points.

The Red Raiders finished 21-1 and won the state Group III title. Ocean City outscored opponents 21-2 in the state tournament.
Mainland Regional football 2008
The Mustangs finished 12-0 and won the South Jersey Group IV title. Quarterback Brent Caprio sparked Mainland, throwing for 4.298 yards and 46 touchdowns in his career and running for 42 touchdowns.

These Braves won the third of Absegami’s four straight state Group IV titles. Absegami finished the season ranked No. 4 in the country and ranked as the nation’s No. 1 public school. The Braves featured Ryan Goodman, Ryan Bridge, Jeff Black and Nick Bridge.

The Red Raiders finished 14-0 and won the state Public B title. Amanda Nunan and Maggie Wallce sparked Ocean City.

The Wildcats finished 11-0 and won the state Non-Public II title. They had five shutouts and allowed more than 14 points in a game just once. St. Joe running back Jack Corcoran scored 28 touchdowns, and quarterback Ryan Simone threw 17 touchdown passes.

The Vikings finished 30-2 and won their second straight South Jersey Group IV championship. Dayshawn Reynolds and Jahleem Montague sparked Atlantic City.

The Crusaders finished 24-7 and won the South Jersey Non-Public B title and their third straight Cape-Atlantic League championship. Wildwood Catholic was peaking at the right time when the COVID-19 Virus canceled the season.

Red Raiders finished 24-1-1 and won the state Group III title. Faith Slimmer and Summer Reimet each scored 35 goals.

The Spartans finished 12-0 and beat Immaculata 26-13 to win the state Non-Public III title. Running back Williams Washington ran for 2,001 yards and scored 226 points.

The Hermits won the South Jersey Coaches Association Tournament and state Non-Public A championship. Connor Hurff led St. Augustine with 25 goals.

The Mustangs finished 15-0 and won the third of what would eventually be four straight state Public B championships. Mainland featured one of the nation’s top scholastic swimmers in Destin Lasco as well as standouts Joey Rogers and Glenn Lasco.

The Braves finished 25-6 and won the state Group IV title. Absegami relied on Tara Booker, Sara Mostafa and Connie James.

Frank Molinaro and Greg Miele led the Rams to the state Group IV title. Southern beat state power Phillipsburg 30-25 in the state. Molinaro is one of the greatest wrestlers in New Jersey history.

This was last of the Fighting Clan’s five straight state Public A titles from 2001-05. Tiffany Malatesta led the Fighting Clan.

The Hermits finished 27-4 and beat Pope John XXIII 8-7 to win the state Non-Public A title. Ed Charlton went 5-0 on the mound and batted .465 for the Hermits.

The Eagles finished 23-1 and won the state Group IV title. EHT featured Tori Szrom and Emily MacNeil. Szrom was 2017 Press Softball Player of the Year. She was 16-1 record with 87 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA in 123 2/3 innings. She hit .385 with 28 RBIs.

St. Augustine featured 26-4 and won the state Non-Public A title with a 1-0 win over Delbarton. Josh Hood sparked the Hermits at the plate. Cole Vanderslice led on the mound.

The Wildcats are one of the most dominant defensive teams in South Jersey history. They finished 10-0, won the state Non-Public I title and allowed just 19 points all seasons.

The Mustangs finished 11-1 and won the South Jersey Group III championship. Mainland opened the season with a win over Penn Charter, which was quarterbacked by current Atlanta Falcon Matt Ryan. The only loss was by a point to Wayne Hills, which featured current NFL standout tight end Greg Olsen. Dan Cappelluti, Mike Bradway and John Rochford led the Mustangs.

The Lions (27-6) won the state Non-Public B championship. Sacred Heart beat Immaculate Conception 3-1 in the title game as Rachel Gavigan had three hits, a run and an RBI.

The Spartans finished 12-0 and won the state Non-Public III title with a 14-13 win over St. Joseph Montvale. Joe Sarnese sparked the Spartans with 93 tackles, five interceptions and nine touchdown catches.

The Red Raiders finished 24-0-1 and won the state Group III championship, beating Scotch Plains 2-0 in the state final. Rafael Duarte led Ocean City with 38 goals.

Sa’eed Nelson and Justyn Mutts led the Hermits to the state Non-Public A championship, beating Bishop Ahr (74-35), Union Catholic (65-52), CBA (85-52), St. Joseph Metchuen (69-67) and Don Bosco Prep (83-50) in the state tournament.

One of the best teams in state history, the Hermits won the state Non-Public A title. Christian Sprang, Owen Black, Blake Trabuchi-Downey and Michael Joyce led the Hermits. Joyce swam at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic trials.

Kylee Watson, who was named a McDonald’s All-American in 2020, led the Mustangs to the state Group III championship and a 28-4 record.
