Buena Regional baseball

Three high school baseball and two softball playoff games are still on for today, despite the cloudy and cool weather.

All five games involving local teams were postponed yesterday due to rain.

Here is a preview of today's games

SOFTBALL

South Jersey Non-Public B final

4 p.m. today

at Richard Stockton College

St. Joseph (23-5)

vs. Mater Dei (14-7)

St. Joe beat Mater Dei 2-1 in last year’s final. The St. Joe Wildcats rely on senior catcher Carly Testa, who has more than 200 career hits. Testa is batting .681 with five home runs and 43 RBIs this season. Taylor Sirolli has pitched two shutouts and struck out 23 in two playoff wins. St. Joe is the top seed and ranked No. 9 in The Press Elite 11. Sophomore pitcher Paige Fernandez leads fourth-seeded Mater Dei. The winner advances to Saturday’s state final against the winner of today’s North Jersey title game between Lodi Immaculate (20-5) and Hudson Catholic (19-6).

Lodi has won two straight state titles and beat St. Joe 5-0 in last year’s title game.

State Group II semifinal

at Eastern High School

Buena Regional (27-4)

vs. Robbinsville (24-3)

This game was originally scheduled for Rowan University, but was moved due to poor field conditions to Eastern. Buena is No. 3 in the Elite 11. The Chiefs have lost to Robbinsville in the state Group II semifinals each of the past two years — 4-0 in 2013 and 7-1 last year. Buena features seniors Lauren Dwyer, Sam Fiocchi and Lynnsie Collins. Robbinsville relies on one of the state’s top pitchers, senior Hannah Olshevski, who is 21-3 with 117 strikeouts. The winner advances to Saturday’s state final against the winner of today’s other semifinal between Ramsey (23-5) and Parsippany (24-5).

Baseball

State Group III semifinal

4 p.m. today

at Rutgers University

Mainland Regional (23-5) vs. Northern Burlington (26-4)

Mainland Regional is No. 2 in the Elite 11. Northern Burlington is No. 3. Mainland is expected to pitch Kyle Gerace, who struck 13 in a 1-0 shutout over Toms River South in the S.J. Group III semifinals. Mainland is the defending state Group III champion. The Mustangs have relied on the clutch hitting of Jack Loefflad, Dean Deveney, Nick Droboniku and Tyler Wray. Matt McLaughlin sparks the Mustangs at the leadoff spot. Northern Burlington has won the Central Group III title in two of the past three seasons. Northern Burlington has one of the state’s deepest lineups, including Ryan Shinn (.500 batting average and 27 RBIs) and Adam Rapp (.430 batting average and 34 RBIs). The winner advances to Saturday’s state final against the winner of today’s other semifinal between Mount Olive (21-10) and South Plainfield (22-8).

State Group II semifinal

4 p.m. today

at Eastern High School

Buena Regional (23-6) vs. Governor Livingston (26-6)

This game was originally scheduled for Rider University but was moved to Eastern High School on Wednesday morning due to the weather. Buena is the defending state Group II champion and No. 8 in the Elite 11. The Chiefs have won seven straight games —four by shutout. Buena is expected to start Andrew Cartier, who is 2-0 in the playoffs this year. The Chiefs rely on Denny Brady, who went 3 for 4 and was the winning pitcher in a 2-1 S.J. final win over Haddonfield. Governor Livingston (Union County) has scored more than 10 runs twice in the playoffs. Third baseman Ian Lynch has 100 career hits. The winner advances to Saturday’s state final against the winner of today’s other semifinal between Bernards (21-6) and Lakeland (18-9).

South Jersey Non-Public B final

4 p.m. Wednesday

at Colonia High School

Holy Spirit (12-16) vs. Marist (17-11)

This game was originally scheduled to be played at East Brunswick Tech, but due to field conditions it will now be played on a artificial turf field at Colonia High School in Colonia. Holy Spirit is the No. 10 seed and has won three playoff games on the road to reach today’s title contest. Spirit has outscored its opponents 20-2 in the playoffs. Sophomore Bobby Spicer is 2-0 with 13 strikeouts in the playoffs. Bill Kral struck out nine in a 10-0 semifinal win over Gill St. Bernards. Chris Lefferts has hit a pair of home runs in the playoffs for Spirit. Marist (Jersey City) relies on ace A.J. Candelario, who has struck out 102 batters. Today’s winner advances to Saturday’s state final against the winner of today’s North Jersey final between Montclair Kimberley Academy (15-15) and Newark Academy (18-12).
