Cedar Creek vs. Haddon Heights girls basketball

Jazzy Duverglas sinks a 3-pointer over Haddon Heights’ Rachel Irish during Tuesday’s game in Egg Harbor City. Duverglas, a senior, now has 1,003 points in her career.

The top five boys and girls Old Grad Award finalists were selected Monday. The award represents the top male and female athletes in Atlantic County who have earned varsity letters in multiple sports.

Alyssa Aldridge from Mainland Regional High School, Jazzy Duverglas (Cedar Creek), Siani Magruder (Egg Harbor Township), Samantha Maxwell (Buena Regional) and Gianna Morganti (St. Joseph) were the female finalists.

Joseph Caporale from Buena Regional, Steve Kingkiner (Cedar Creek), Andrew Marcucci (Absegami), Dimitris Pali (Holy Spirit) and GianCarlo Palmieri (Hammonton) were the male finalists.

The Old Grad Award has been presented for more than 50 years and was started by former Press of Atlantic City sports editor Ed Nichterlein, and it was continued by Joe and George McCabe. The Press is no longer associated with the awards.

Nominees are recommended by a committee of retired coaches, athletic directors and the Nichterlein and McCabe families. The top five boys and girls are selected from a scoring system.

The male and female Old Grad Award winners will be announced at a luncheon at Greate Bay Country Club on June 4.

Alexa Burns (Absegami), Alexa Gardner (Hammonton), Kamryn Englert (Holy Spirit), Gabriella Johnson (Oakcrest), Cristal Valez (Pleasantville) were the other female nominees.

Cristian Bell (Egg Harbor Township), James Kryjer (Mainland Regional), Matt Carter (Oakcrest) and LeQuai Athill (Pleasantville) were the other male nominees.
