Some 3,000 high school runners braved the rain and mud to compete in the 23rd annual Cross Country Cherokee Challenge Saturday morning.

The meet, held at Cherokee High School in Marlton, featured 100 high schools from four states. Considered the unofficial start of high school cross country, the invitational features a short, two-mile course, packed with tight turns, multiple hills and large galleries cheering on the runners.
