The Southern Regional High School girls volleyball team lost 2-0 to North Hunterdon on Saturday afternoon in the state Group IV championship match at William Paterson University.

The scores were 25-19 and 25-23.

Southern, the second seed in the 34-team tournament, finished the season 31-5. Top-seeded North Hunterdon improved to 32-1. Its lone loss was 2-1 to Hunterdon Central on Sept. 26.

The match was Southern’s first state final since 2009.

The Rams won the state Group IV championship in 2008.

On Saturday, Kari Klimek led Southern with eight kills. Gianna Schiattarella added one ace, three kills and two digs.Stephanie Soares had nine assists and three digs. Sarah Gildea had two aces, and Zoe Deakyne and Jess Sprankle each added four digs.

For North Hunterdon, Caroline Layding had eight kills and four blocks, and Eleanor Stothoff had seven kills and six blocks.
